Low impact tourism offers a wide variety of opportunites for the economic development of rural communities in areas of ecological importance. Through a variety of activities (ecotourism, adventure tourism, naturalist tourism, scuba diving, avitourism, hiking, camping, etc.), tourists generate economic revenue that can act as a direct incentive for the protection of landscapes, flora, fauna and ecosystems. To maximize and take advantage of the lessons learned in our diverse project sites, the Conservation Tourism Program links conservation projects with community interests and opportunities, governmental and private support, responsible tourism businesses, national and international promotion, capacity building and technical training. This program has increased its scope and broadened its influence thanks to support from other programs within our organization. However, in the strategic plan for the upcoming year, our focus will be to propel this program forward in order to continue implementing low impact tourism activities in priority regions of northwestern Mexico.
