For the past 11 years Javier has belonged to the ITESM - Pronatura Bird Conservation Program as part of the field team. Due to many years spent in the field, he knows the Western Sierra Madre like the back of his hand and he uses this extensive experience and knowledge to promote conservation and research in the area. He has found and monitored more than 700 Thick-billed Parrot nests using specialized techniques such as probes, video, climbing, capture and banding of adult birds and chicks, telemetry, monitoring of flocks and nest productivity. In 2008 he published the first systematic 5 year study about "Breeding biology of Eared Quetzals in the Sierra Madre Occidental, Mexico. J. Field Ornithol. 79(1):20-23, 2008. Javier is an avid photographer of his feathered subjects and enjoys sport fishing and mountain climbing.
